Understanding Your Nervous System: Why You Feel the Way You Feel** by Jana Denker

Most women I work with tell me the same thing in different words:

“Sometimes I feel like I’m not myself — even though nothing is really wrong.”

You might feel clear and connected one moment…

and tense, overwhelmed, shut down, or frozen the next.

There is a reason for this.

And once you understand it, your whole life begins to make more sense.

Let me walk you through it — gently, clearly, without jargon.

Your nervous system is your internal threat detector

Deep in your brainstem lives a small, incredibly powerful system whose job is simple:

Keep you alive.

It does this by constantly scanning your environment — and your relationships — for signs of safety or potential danger.

It compares everything you experience with everything you’ve lived before.

This happens automatically, without conscious thought.

If something even remotely resembles an old stressor, your body reacts before your mind can interpret it.

This is why a tone of voice

a pause in a conversation

a full schedule

a moment of uncertainty

can feel surprisingly intense.

Your body remembers even when you think you’ve moved on.

The 5 main states of your nervous system

We move in and out of these states all day.

Each one has a purpose — and each one shapes how you feel, think, and respond.

Fight

Metaphor: A lion is chasing you and you are reday to defend yourself.

Your system sends energy forward to meet a challenge.

Body: tension, heat, clenched jaw

Emotions: irritation, anger, urgency

Thoughts: “I have to fix this now.”

Behaviors: pushing, arguing, controlling, bracing

2. Flight

Metaphor: Running from the lion.

Your system prepares you to move quickly.

Body: restlessness, fast heartbeat

Emotions: anxiety, worry

Thoughts: “I need to get out of here.”

Behaviors: overworking, perfectionism, rushing, people-pleasing

3.Shut Down

Metaphor: The bear in hibernation.

Your system conserves energy when everything feels too much.

Body: heaviness, numbness, low energy

Emotions: emptiness, disconnection, shame

Thoughts: “I can’t deal with this.” "No point, it is hopeless"

Behaviors: withdrawing, going quiet, functioning without feeling

3. Freeze

Metaphor: The deer in headlights.

Danger feels close, but action feels impossible.

Body: stillness, held breath, stiff, frozen

Emotions: overwhelm, dread

Thoughts: “I have to, but i can't”

Behaviors: procrastinating, pausing, dissociative drifting, indecision

4. Ventral (your connected state)

Metaphor: The grounded, steady center of you.

This is where your system feels safe enough to engage.

Body: openness, breath, presence

Emotions: calm, connection, curiosity, compassion

Thoughts: “I can handle this.” "I am able, I am capable - even if it is difficult".

Behaviors: honest conversations, creativity, clear boundaries, aligned choices

All these states serve a purpose

This part matters:

None of these states are bad.

None of them mean you’re failing, or not resilient, or “too emotional.”

They are intelligent biological responses designed to protect you.

We shift between them constantly —

a deadline → a bit of flight

a conflict → a touch of fight

a long day → a moment of shut down

a big decision → a hint of freeze

a walk outside → back into ventral

This is normal.

The challenge is not that these states appear.

The challenge is when we get stuck in one of the protective states for too long.

Or when we make important choices from thses state.

That’s when life begins to feel:

• heavier than it should

• harder than it needs to

• more draining than you can explain

And this is exactly where nervous system work changes everything.

Why understanding this changes your life

When you know what your nervous system is doing, you stop blaming yourself for being:

• “too sensitive”

• “too emotional”

• “too much in your head”

• “not motivated enough”

You begin to see what’s actually happening:

Your body is trying to keep you safe with the tools it learned early in your life.

And once you learn how to work with your system — not against it —

• your mind becomes clearer

• your choices become easier

• communication becomes steadier

• boundaries feel more natural

• relationships become more honest

• your energy returns

This is the foundation for every kind of lasting change.

How I support women with this work

I’ve walked this path myself.

Many years ago, I tried mindset work, productivity tricks, affirmations — and felt like I kept hitting a glass ceiling.

It wasn’t until I understood my nervous system — and learned to work with my body first — that things finally shifted.

This is why I now support women using three pillars:

Body → Mind → Expression

• We start by helping your body feel safer.

• Then your mind becomes clearer.

• Then your words — and your life — begin to change.

This work is deep, practical, and profoundly life-shifting.

A soft invitation

If this helped you understand yourself better, you’re already on your way.

And if you want support as you step into a steadier, more connected version of yourself, my 1:1 coaching might be for you.

You don’t need to become someone else.

You just need to come back to the you beneath the overwhelm.
